A vaginal examination in labour can potentially reveal a breech presentation baby and provide information on the progress of labour. However the same examination can be disruptive on the progress of labour with ensuing consequences. There is a diversity of opinion over whether a vaginal examination should be performed on all women in labour, including those undergoing normal labour - i.e. without any clinical indications of a problem.
Talk to your Nikau midwife in advance of labour and discuss the relative merits of vaginal examination. Your midwife will usually outline the circumstances under which she would reccomend a vaginal examination. That may include not undertaking a vaginal examination in many circumstances. Your midwife will however undertake them if you request her to do so.
